Rolex Cosmograph Daytona – John Mayer Edition

The Rolex Daytona is an all-time classic piece and most watch collectors will have it as part of their collection at one point or another. And this is why we talk about Rolex‘s most famous model time and time again in our blog. For example, we‘ve discussed the Daytona in platinum with baguette indexes  (click here to read the article) – by the way one of my personal Grail Rolexes – and the vintage Rolex Daytona Patrizzi (click here to read the article). And today, we‘d like to tell you about another gem on the Swiss luxury brand’s product line: the Rolex Daytona Cosmograph – John Mayer edition.

No, the watch is not a limited-edition paying homage to the famous musician. Actually, the watch has nothing to do with John. But the American singer is a very passionate watch collector who has frequently been spotted wearing the gold watch. Additionally, he said in a watch interview that it was a great steal among Rolex watches. And just like that, the yellow gold Daytona with the green dial got the nickname “John Mayer Daytona” (sometimes also referred to as the Hulktona following the nickname of the Submariner Hulk).

The green dial version of the Daytona was released at Baselworld in 2016 with the official Rolex reference 116508. Back then, as for almost every Rolex sports model in gold, the demand wasn‘t really high. But thanks to the watch hype over recent years, and after seeing many Hollywood stars, athletes and artists wearing this piece, it gained more and more popularity which pushed demand to an ever new high. The 18ct yellow gold beauty officially sells for CHF 34,900 (but you need to be very lucky to get one), whereas the market price is around CHF 55,000 and CHF 65,000.

It is important to mention that the interview with John Mayer was not the turning point in the Daytona’s popularity (as many other Rolex forums and articles discuss), rather, the hype has already started a few months before. Green is the color of wealth for many cultures across Asia so it is no surprise that the Daytona with the bright green dial became a status symbol for the wealthy in the region. However, the interview with the American singer was significant in increasing the watch’s popularity – I would never doubt that.

Let’s take a closer look at the features. The bright sunburst green dial is very eye catching and features 18ct gold hour markers with Chromalight. Depending on the sunlight and angle, the dial could appear black or bright green, going from palm tree leaf to almost British racing green (see our pictures). The watch comes with the classic Rolex Oyster bracelet and an engraved tachymetric scale, both in 18ct gold as well. The caliber used by Rolex is the in-house manufactured 4130 which sits inside the 40mm gold case. The self-winding luxury chronograph has a power reserve of 72 hours. Not to mention, the Daytona passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests.

The watch is a great daily companion. It looks perfect with streetwear like sneakers, blue jeans and simple white shirt. But it‘s also great for when you want to add a success statement to a suit. But pay attention! When worn in the wrong circumstance, the watch can make you look arrogant.

TCC and our clients love the Rolex Daytona Cosmograph – John Mayer Edition. It’s no wonder why watch nerds struggle to get their hands on a one of these beautiful masterpieces.
